Principal's Message

Dorian Maag

Dear Thomas Jefferson Families,

It is an honor to be your new principal and a part of the Rock Island-Milan School District team. I have over 20 years in education in a variety of different roles. I am looking forward to utilizing my previous experiences and knowledge to continue to build upon the strong foundation at Thomas Jefferson Elementary. I am excited to get to know all of you and begin working together to build respectful and positive relationships as partners in your child’s educational journey.

Thomas Jefferson is part of Rock Island-Milan School District 41 and is the only school located in Milan, IL. Thomas Jefferson is home to approximately 350 students, grades K-6. We also house one Head Start classroom and one Preschool for All classroom. Thomas Jefferson offers a wide variety of academic programs for our students from support to enrichment opportunities, designed to maximize each student’s individual potential.

Thomas Jefferson is a Leader in Me school. The Leader in Me is based on Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Successful People, but tailored to meet the needs of elementary schools. All of us at Thomas Jefferson, adults and children alike, work to internalize and demonstrate the Seven Habits and we use them as the basis for all of our relationships both inside and outside of our school. Through The Leader in Me, we work to help our students identify what they are passionate about, what their goals are, and we help them develop plans to meet those goals. All students at TJ have leadership roles and leadership responsibilities.

Rock Island-Milan School District 41’s purpose is “To educate for individual student success”. Our focus on meeting the needs of each child academically and through The Leader in Me helps us bring that purpose to life. Our priorities at Thomas Jefferson and in District 41 are to: 1) Increase student achievement; 2) Build respectful relationships; and 3) Improve operations. All of our focus is centered on these three priorities.

I want to ensure that all students are reaching their potential and that we are working as a team to best meet the needs of each student and help them be successful lifelong learners.

I am looking forward to getting to know the families, students, staff, and Thomas Jefferson community, and toward an exciting and rewarding year of learning and growth.
